Charles N. Ellis, MD

Charles N. Ellis, MD, is the William B. Taylor Professor of Clinical Dermatology at the University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor. He is Associate Chair of the Department, Director of its Residency Training Program, and Chief of the Dermatology Service at the Ann Arbor Veterans Affairs Health System. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School and served his residency in the University's Department of Dermatology. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Dermatology.
Dr. Ellis has been named one of the "Best Doctors in America" each year since 1994, is listed in the "Guide to Top Doctors" and "Guide to America's Top Physicians", and has been recognized as a "doctor's doctor" in the University of Michigan Health System.
Dr. Ellis graduated from medical school with the Dean's Award for Research. He has received the University of Michigan H. R. Johnson Award for Leadership in Diversity and the Director's Award at the Ann Arbor Veterans Affairs Health System.
Dr. Ellis has published more than 250 journal articles and book chapters. A citation analysis found him to be among the dozen most-referenced dermatologists in the world, reflecting the importance of his published papers in both dermatology and high-impact general medical journals. His papers in dermatology journals were cited 2009 times in a 14-year period. For his papers published in 5 "high-impact" general medical journals, he is the 3rd most cited first-author with 894 citations in a 16-year period including two of his papers each being cited over 200 times.
Dr. Ellis maintains a research interest in immunologic therapies of atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and other skin conditions.  Among his inventions in dermatology is a method for evaluating psoriasis called the Lattice System Physicians Global Assessment.
In 2000, Dr. Ellis initiated the customer service program in the Department of Dermatology. Since then, the Department continuously has been ranked number one in patient satisfaction in the U-M Health System. Dr. Ellis is now assisting the University of Michigan Health System in improving Service Excellence.
Dr. Ellis has held a number of visiting professorships and serves on the editorial boards of several journals including the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. He is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Dermatological Association, the Society for Investigative Dermatology, and the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research.
